City of Holmes Beach Information

A little after World War II, Jack Holmes arrived on Anna Maria Island and created a 600 acre community. While clearing the land for roads and homes it was common for the residents to run into panthers, wildcats, and rattlesnakes. In 1950, Holmes Beach was incorporated and Halsey T. Tichenor served as it’s first mayor. Directly in the center of Anna Maria Island and all it’s beautiful beaches you will find the shores of Holmes Beach. Much like the beaches all over this island, Holmes Beach’s quiet and relaxing atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to stick your umbrella in the sand and enjoy the view. Although the shoreline is relaxing, don’t be fooled that the rest of this city is lacking any activity; this city strip is loaded with great shopping and a variety of different food choices. From burgers at Skinny’s to 5 star dining with the Beach Bistro, all these choices have their great taste and food quality in common. For activities outside of the water, food and shopping you will find live music playing at the public beach, a skate park for the kids (or yourself!) and plenty of bike and beach rental companies to rent from that have superb pricing and quality! (Our personal favorite is Fun And More Rentals!)

This island is great for walking and biking with a lot of cross walks and road signs indicating that the pedestrian has the right of way and that sharing the road is key. Being that this island’s residents are so friendly you will have no problem getting anywhere whether you need directions or the right of way.
